GOING GREEN

It is difficult these days to turn on or open any media that does not have some attention being given to the Earth friendly awareness.Going Green also has a carryover to flower shops as well in several areas of daily operation. Going Green can also take on a renewed importance in your daily production of floral sty-lings. Foliage makes a strong contribution when used correctly. There are several considerations to assess before completing a floral composition. Color, strength, texture, and line are but a few of the considerations.
While many shops stock ‘basic foliage’ , there are many exciting and numerous choices to add interest and give a more signature look to your present floral arrangements. While there is nothing wrong with using a traditional Leatherleaf, it provides firm foundation for other foliage’s to be added. When considering foliage additions, think about the desired outcome. Desiring a more contemporary or Architectural impact? Try incorporating more linear foliage such as Eucalyptus, Scotch Broom, Horse Tail,Meyerri, Aspidistra or Palmetto. These foliage’s all have strong lines and can add strength and dynamic line to a composition.
While most people think of foliage as ‘green’, remember that there are many shades of green from the gray greens of Dusty Miller and Eucalyptus, to the yellow greens and white greens of Variegated Pittosporum, Oregonia, Variegated Italian Pittosporum, and Lily Grass. Deep rich greens of Salal, Ligustrum, Camellia, and Comador add strength through color as well.
While it is easy to grab whatever foliage is available and make it work, with a broader selection of foliage, the end result becomes stronger and more distinctive. Everyone form the designers to the recipients will enjoy using and receiving a more ‘Signature’ look and it all starts with using the right green.
