Flowers That Give Back: From the Flower Empower Luncheon to a Growing National Movement

Giving flowers a second life and extending their ability to make a difference

At Florabundance, our involvement in the Flower Empower program has always reflected a core belief: flowers are more than a product. They are an experience, an emotion, and, in many cases, a source of genuine comfort. That belief was powerfully reinforced at the recent Dream Foundation Flower Empower Annual Luncheon, held at the Rosewood Miramar Beach, an afternoon defined by inspiration, connection, and purpose.

Stories That Stay With You

One of the most moving moments of the luncheon came when several recipients shared their personal stories. These were individuals recovering from life-threatening illnesses, speaking about what it meant to receive a floral arrangement during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

They described how flowers brought light into hospital rooms, created a sense of calm during uncertainty, and offered a simple but profound reminder that they were not alone. These were not just stories. They were proof. Flowers are not a luxury. They are essential to emotional well-being.

$250,000 Raised and What It Supports

This year’s luncheon raised an impressive $250,000, helping support the continued growth of the Flower Empower program. Those funds directly support the logistics that make this work possible, including the Flower Empower delivery van, fuel and operational costs, bouquet supplies like ribbon and wrapping materials, and the infrastructure needed to collect, repurpose, and redistribute flowers at scale. It is a model built on efficiency, compassion, and purpose.

Florabundance’s Commitment: Giving Flowers a Second Life

For Florabundance, this mission is deeply personal. We donate flowers weekly, year-round, flowers that are past their prime but still full of beauty and meaning. Instead of going to waste, they are thoughtfully repurposed into fresh arrangements and delivered to individuals who need them most. It is a simple idea with a powerful outcome: extend the life of flowers, and extend their ability to bring joy.

The Flower Empower Program in Action

One of the most inspiring connections from the luncheon came through a group of volunteers from St. Louis representing Joy Petalers. Their work repurposing flowers for hospitals, hospice care, and senior communities mirrors the mission of Flower Empower in the best possible way.

Following the luncheon, the group visited the Florabundance facility in Carpinteria to experience the process firsthand. Together, we participated in what we call flower petaling, the hands-on transformation of flowers past their prime into fresh, meaningful arrangements ready for redistribution.

Surrounded by buckets of blooms, that visit captured something bigger than a single afternoon. It reflected a shared purpose that is gaining momentum across the country.

A Movement Taking Root Nationwide

What we are witnessing is the growth of a national movement. Organizations like Joy Petalers, alongside programs like Flower Empower, are showing how flowers can continue to serve a meaningful purpose long after their initial use. What might once have been considered waste is now being transformed into comfort, connection, and dignity, and this model is being adopted in communities across the United States.

Aligning With a Larger Vision

This work aligns with the broader message of That Flower Feeling, an initiative dedicated to encouraging people to bring flowers into their daily lives as part of self-care and emotional wellness. At the luncheon, that message came to life. When recipients describe how flowers helped them through recovery, reduced stress, and brought light into dark moments, it moves beyond marketing. It becomes a lived experience.

More Flowers, More Often

For everyone in the floral industry, growers, wholesalers, florists, and designers alike, this represents both an opportunity and a responsibility. To think beyond traditional occasions. To expand how and where flowers are used. To support programs that bring flowers into everyday life, especially in moments when they are needed most.

At Florabundance, we are proud to play a role in this effort. Because in the end, it is not just about flowers. It is about what they do for people. More flowers, in more hands, more often.
